Overview

If detected early on, tooth decay can be treated with a dental filling or a similar procedure to clean the enamel and seal the area. However, if the decay spreads past the enamel and infects the inner pulp of the tooth, you will likely need a root canal. Also called an endodontic treatment, root canal therapy at Dr. Sangiv Patel's private practice removes the damaged pulp from the tooth, sanitizes the cavity, and then uses a filling or restorative material to seal the tooth. Experienced dentist Dr. Patel recommends this therapy to Melbourne, FL individuals because it both treats the infected tooth and prevents the decay from moving to other teeth, which often creates a larger issue.

We understand that some may reservations about the procedure if they think they are a candidate for root canal therapy. Although root canal therapy is a very common dental procedure, many people often avoid going to see a dentist because of common dental fears despite their level of discomfort. Dr. Patel and his team make their best effort to help you feel comfortable and at ease in their care, even offering a number of sedation options for those who experience anxiety. Contact our office, Sangiv I. Patel, D.D.S., PA, to set up a consultation with Dr. Patel and learn more about root canal therapy.

Best Candidates

An infection in the pulp of a tooth can be caused by a cavity, a deep crack in the tooth, or a physical trauma. The most obvious symptoms of an infection are tooth or jaw pain, swelling or discoloration of the gums around the tooth, changes in the color of the tooth, or sensitivity to consuming hot or cold foods. If the infection is not addressed, the infection will spread, potentially causing you even more pain. Schedule an appointment at Dr. Patel's private practice right away if you feel or notice something abnormal in your mouth. If you have reservations about visiting the dentist, please ask us about sedation options to keep you calm and comfortable during your dental appointments, and trust your oral health to our compassionate care and expertise.

What To Expect

Dr. Patel will discuss the procedure with you beforehand. We want all of our patients to feel at ease and relaxed while in our care so we will provide nitrous oxide in addition to the local anesthesia if requested. Dr. Patel is very sympathetic about dental anxieties, and he will assist you in making all necessary decisions regarding your sedation needs.

During an endodontic procedure, Dr. Patel will assess the inner chamber of your tooth, remove the decayed pulp, and shape the tooth chamber utilizing his laser-assisted technology. Afterward, the inside of the empty chamber will be carefully sterilized to remove any remaining decay. To finalize the therapy, the tooth will be filled with a special material to seal and protect the enamel.

Recovery

Following your treatment, you will be able to drive home (unless given powerful sedation), and you should feel comfortable enough to continue on with your daily routine. Your mouth may feel sensitive or swollen following the procedure, but these are normal symptoms and can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers. We recommend that you set up a follow-up six months after your root canal in which Dr. Patel will check to make sure that the infection has been eradicated and that your mouth has healed completely. Even after your root canal procedure, you should continue to schedule annual dental exams and bi-annual cleanings to maintain your dental health.

Insurance Coverage

At your consultation, Dr. Patel will give you cost estimates so that your treatment fits both your needs and budget. If you currently carry dental insurance, we can contact your carrier to determine your coverage. If you don't have dental insurance, our office, Sangiv I. Patel, D.D.S., PA, accepts several payment methods and may be able to help you find low-interest medical financing if necessary.
